Ray Horner Jr.

Born in 1952 in New Haven, Connecticut, I began my creative journey early, inspired by my mother who painted as a hobby. Encouraged by teachers, I started painting seriously as a child and was introduced to oil paints by a guest artist at the age of ten.

In high school I explored drafting and art, and although I once considered architecture, I chose to pursue a BFA in Fine Arts at the University of Connecticut in 1970. My work now focuses on figurative subjects—landscapes, people, and expressive abstracts that sometimes incorporate symbolic elements such as circles for completeness and triangles for the Trinity. My faith plays an important role in my creative process, guided by 2 Corinthians 5:14–15.

I love teaching because it allows me to share both technique and the joy of seeing the world with an artist’s eye. When I’m not painting or teaching watercolor and drawing, I serve as an associate pastor at Calvary Gospel Church in Newark, NJ. I’m grateful to enjoy this season of life alongside my wonderful wife of 47 years.
